BEAUTIFUL VERY RARE ANTIQUE 18. CENTURY GEORGE II NEWCASTLE SOLID STERLING SILVER TEAPOT - LOVELY LATER DECORATION IN BRIGHT CUT SILVER - BLANK CARTOUCHES - HIGH QUALITY - JAMES KIRKUP - GEORGE II ERA - HALLMARKED NEWCASTLE 1738? - HEAVY WEIGHT 442g - HIGHLY COLLECTABLE! This is a beautiful, very rare, antique mid 18. Century Newcastle hallmarked solid silver teapot from the reign of George II in a good gauge of silver.

It has lovely decoration in bright cut silver which will have been a later addition and surrounds two blank cartouches, one on either side - please see the photos. His impressive piece of silver was c. It is hallmarked for the very collectable Newcastle Assay Office, which closed in April 1884. I believe that the year letter to the base is for 1738, it may be later but James Kirkup was known to be active from about 1713 until his death in 1753.

Either way, it definitely seems to date from the mid 18. The teapot is in a good gauge of silver and is heavy, weighing 442g. This is 15.59oz and just over 14 troy ounces.

The teapot is, in my opinion, in very reasonable antique condition, especially considering it is probably over 280 years old. There are the usual signs of wear commensurate with age and use. There are some shallow dings, little dinks here and there; scratches; a few repairs in the spout area, where it is joined to the body and some very slight distortion to the end; cracks to the two insulators; the knop is a bit loose and does not quite meet the body when screwed in, perhaps not the original screwing mechanism? The lid and hinge are in good order and it opens and closes fine.

It is about 18.5cm in height to the tip of the pointed finial; just under 20cm in width from the end of the spout to the end of the handle; about 9cm in depth across the lower and largest part of the body. As noted, it weighs a heavy 442g. Which is nearly all of solid silver, as it is not weighted anywhere. Please see the detailed condition report above. Any dark patches, etc are reflections or bits of age-related patina. Whilst you are here, why not take a look at our other lovely pieces of solid silver?
