RARE 18TH CENTURY GEORGIAN SOLID SILVER ACORN & FILIGREE SPICE BOX - VINAIGRETTE. This is a Beautiful rare mid 18th century Georgian solid silver vinaigrette or spice box in the form of an Acorn with filgree work. I would estimate this dates to circa 1760 making it nearly 220 years old.
This stunning Spice Box Vinaigrette is in the form of an Acorn with a beautiful hinged dome top which has a cast gadroon decoration, the body is wonderful with its smooth finish and curved design, this is finished to the base with the most wonderful filgree work decoration which forms a very pretty flower, to the top it has a silver loop from which to hang the acorn, on opening the hinged top you will see it still has traces of its gold gilt finish to the lid, if you look closely you can also see traces of a wonderful blue enamel that would have once covered the interior, this also has hallmarks to the inside, four in total but to small to read. The quality of the craftsmanship is superb. T his would have once belonged to a young lady in the 18th century and been used daily, it. Would have contained a sponge soaked in aromatic oils.
Or held spices, this was in a time when things were so very different, if this box could talk i can just imagine what fascinating stories it could tell, it is so very tactile and once held it has the most wonderful feel. This will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice. The condition is wonderful with just a tiny ding. 4 cm length to the top of the loop and 2 cm width.
